Webelos Outdoor Weekend Campout (WOW)

Description

WEBELOS OUTDOOR WEEKEND (WOW)

September 20 - 22, 2019

Webelos Outdoor Weekend (WOW) is an awesome opportunity for Webelos (and their parents) to experience some of the fun that they can look forward to once they become Boy Scouts. On Saturday, dens will rotate in a round-robin style of activities. Each den will learn a variety of different outdoor and Boy Scout skills and put them to use in live demonstrations and inner-den competitions. Troop 1299 will help with the activities as well as help the Webelos along. On Saturday night, there will be a rousing campfire program.  This year's WOW will take place at Camp James Ray, near Pottsboro, TX. (map)

CAMPOUT PLANNING Monday, September 16, 7:00 pm

  • Join us Monday night at Palmer Hall, located in the building just west of Suncreek United Methodist Church (1517 W. McDermott Dr, Allen, TX 75013).
  • Attendance at campout planning is mandatory, as we will collect fees and plan meals, etc.

HOW MUCH DOES IT COST?

  • The fee to camp at WOW is $15 per Webelo and $15 per parent.  This can be paid via cash or check made out to Troop 1299.  We will take care of registering you and your Webelo.
  • Please bring $12 cash for your son to pitch in for grub money for his Webelo patrol (see below).
  • Please bring $15 cash for your adult portion of grub money (adults eat very good at campouts!).
  • Summary:  If one parent and one Webelo are attending, then you will bring $15+$15+$12+$15 = $57 total.  All but the $12 for your Webelo’s grub money can pe paid via check if you prefer.

WHAT ABOUT TRANSPORTATION?

  • On Friday, September 20th, please plan to meet at Palmer Hall no later than 5:30 pm for an on-time departure at 6:00 pm.
  • Your Webelo can watch how Troop 1299 mobilizes to depart for a typical campout.  He is also welcome to load his gear onto our troop trailer.
  • Please make arrangements to drive to Camp James Ray with your Webelo in your own vehicle.

WHAT ARE THE COOKING/FOOD ARRANGEMENTS?

  • The Webelos will cook as a Patrol with supervision from you and older Scouts from Troop 1299.  This will be an exciting learning experience for them.
  • At campout planning, the Webelos will work together to:
    • Gather the grub money ($12 cash per Webelo).
    • Plan a menu.  They will use a Campout Menu and Duty Roster.  A Boy Scout from Troop 1299 will assist them in this.
    • Assign grubmasters who will collect the money and shop for groceries later in the week for the entire Webelo patrol (with assistance from parent(s) of course).  This is a fun part of the process for them.
  • For adults, we want you to concentrate on watching your Webelo learn and grow.  Troop 1299 adult leaders will prepare your meals for you.  All you have to do is pitch in $15 for grub at campout planning night and we will do the rest, including shopping and cooking.  Please make us aware of any dietary restrictions you may have on Monday night.

WHAT ABOUT GEAR?

  • The Troop utilizes two trailers and camping equipment to provide each Patrol with tents, cooking equipment, cleaning equipment, shovels, stoves and lanterns.  You and your Webelo will need to bring your own personal camping gear, which includes:
    • Sleeping bag
    • Mess kit (minimum bowl, cup, fork, knife, spoon)
    • Water bottle (1 liter Nalgene recommended)
    • Change of clothes appropriate for the forecasted weather
    • Personal items (i.e. toothbrush, etc.)
    • Poncho or raincoat (just in case)
    • Flashlight (small and lightweight is best, such as a headlamp)
    • NO ELECTRONICS for Scouts (this includes phones)
  • You do NOT need to bring any cooking gear.
  • All items (except sleeping bag) should be packed in a small duffel bag or backpack
  • Your Webelo should plan to wear his Class A uniform for travel to and from the campout.
  • Adults can bring their own tents if they prefer, but we have tents if you need one.  Your Webelo will camp with other Webelos just as he will when he joins a troop!

WHAT ARE THE SLEEPING ARRANGEMENTS?

  • Your Webelo will be camping in the same tents, and in the same area, with his fellow Webelos in a patrol.  There are usually 2-3 scouts/tent.
  • Adults will be tenting in the vicinity, but not interspersed with the patrol.  Please do not plan to tent with your son.

WHAT ABOUT BSA HEALTH FORMS?

  • Click HERE to download BSA Health Forms A & B.  Please complete these forms for your Webelo (and yourself if you are a registered member of BSA).
  • Please keep these forms with you.  They will be your individual responsibility throughout the campout.  We will not be collecting these forms.
